I just replaced my single action fuel pump on my 52 Vic with a dual action pump that was on the car when I bought it. The reason I put the dual pump on was because my wipers were not working well at all. Also, I put a PCV valve on which was drawing vacuum from the carb base. I now realize that there are two vacuum ports on the base of the pump. However, the left port has a metal tube fitting for a vacuum hose but the right one does not. There is just an opening on the right side. I know that one of these ports is an inlet and the other is an outlet. The pump will not operate the wipers unless both ports are in operation. How could I add a tube to the empty port since there is no tube extension on the right port? Also an explanation of the routing of the two ports would be helpful. Thank you for time and expertise!

Measure the dia. of the existing tube and obtain a tube of the same size (steel fuel/brake line )
Do what ever has to be done for the tube to slip fit the hole and secure with super glue.

Double action fuel pumps are hard on cam shaft.Wears them down and will not pump fuel.

One of the ports on the fuel pump for the wiper vacuum assist goes to the wiper motor, and the other goes to manifold vacuum.

I have a brand new double action pump sitting the the shelf for just this reason. I'd like to use it, but I am afraid of rapid cam wear. All of my of my logic and reason said that if it was offered, it must be OK, but I am still hesitant to install it. Would anyone else care to chime in on this subject?

Running scared! Lots of negative talk on the dual action fuel pump! How did Ford get away with this if its so bad? Is anyone using this pump without problems? Right now I'm leaning toward putting my rebuilt single action back on in the morning! Thanks for all of your comments! Ron(artron9)

Dismantled a '51 Merc. some time back with one on it.
The cam lobe showed much 'galling'.
As I recall the problem stemmed from faulty metallurgy of the cams.
In my case the availability of electric wiper conversions is a far better solution than the vacuum assist pump which is more like a band-aid.

My '50 has a dual pump. Bought the car in 2001 had a rebuilt dual on it then, still on it and no problems. Had a '51 back in the old days with the same dual pump, put over
50,000 miles on it with same isky cam......no trouble.

Decided to put the single action pump back in. Filled the bowl with gas. Will not start. Should never have removed it in the first place. Any thoughts?

Dad bought a new 51 Ford V-8 WITH a dual action pump,, drove it 130000 miles....no problem

A little off topic, but my curiosity has been piqued. Was a double action pump an option from the factory of Fords? I thought they came on Mercury's and/or were an aftermarket product. Also trucks maybe? Anybody know?

The dual action pump is in the 48-52 ford truck parts book for the 239. I have a NOS one still in the ford box. The cam wear comments worry me though.

The manual makes no mention of hose installation / orientation?

The manifold vacuum sucks through the pump....so with engine running find out what is the suction on the pump that goes to wipers, intakemanifold attaches to the other.

Thanks, a little off topic but would you know if there would have been any type of clamp on the vacuum hose on the inlets/outlets? I don’t see reference to any in the parts book.

I believe that the double action pump was standard on
Fords equipped with overdrive or automatic transmissions.

I have a service bulletin somewhere where Ford cautions against these aftermarket double action pumps for this very reason. Due to government safety regs they made the double action pump stock. Maybe their version was not as hard on the cam. They must have had a ton of vacuum wipers in stock to do this instead of going electric.
