5.50 x 16 bias tire question, '36 5 window
Does anyone know the original diameter of the 5.50x16 bias tires that Ford put on the '36?
I just purchased a set of 6.00x16 Double whitewall radials from Diamond Back and they are great, that is except for the spare. It sticks out from under the cover by about half an inch. Diamond Back carries a 5.50x16 but it is only 26.5 in diameter vs. the 6.00x16 which is 28.1 in diameter, thus I am afraid their 5.50 would be way too small if I ever had to use it. Yes, I could carry an extra spare in the trunk, but it would take up lots of room in the rumble seat area and be hard to get out. And I have a divider panel between the lift up seat and the trunk area so it can't come out that way. |

That surely is a nice looking car, Steve. The picture, when blown-up, makes it appear that the FRONT, RIGHT tire/wheel is canted inward at the top (too much NEGATIVE Camber). That could be the case if the axle has become bent for some reason. What does it look like when checking from straight-on ahead at the front? Hope I'm wrong! DD |

spare tire cover and purchased a whitewall spare. I used the hub cap also, and IMO it looked as good if not better than the spare with cover.

Put the metal cover in the attic and buy a nice vinyl spare tire cover from one of the V-8 parts vendors. It leaves the spare on the back and will fit the new tire.

Same story on my '35 Touring with the Diamondbacks. My solution is to have just the tire with no covers, goes with the rustic look of this car.

Thanks all. I do think the ring is part of the character of the car so I do want to keep it. I have access to a second ring and, if nothing else, have considered cutting it long ways around the middle and welding in a half or 5/8 wide piece in to widen the ring.
V8Coopman, how did you enlarge the picture? I could not figure out how to do that. |

Steve ....I'm assuming this is the NEW picture you mean? If so, scroll up to the top of THIS (or ANY) page here on the FordBarn. In the BLACK band, just below the FordBarn logo, you will see "User CP". Click on "User CP". A new page opens. On the LEFT side of the page will be a column of options. Just below the 3rd GRAY WINDOW, it will say "Edit Avatar". Click on "Edit Avatar". A window opens with TWO choices at the bottom. The simplest option for you MAY be OPTION #2. If so, put your cursor on the SMALL thumbnail picture of your car just above. RIGHT-click on that thumbnail. A window drops down. LEFT-click on: "Save Image As", and give that image a name. Then, click on "SAVE" to store that picture SOMEWHERE on your computer. Now, using that "OPTION #2", you should be able to make the new picture your avatar. IF this does not work for you, PM me and we'll get it changed for you. Making BIG pictures is easy! DD . |

Re: 5.50 x 16 bias tire question, '36 5 window
I have the same issue with my car. I just fit the cover on the best I could.
One thought would be to see if a Coker 600x16 has a smaller tread with. Might be more cost effective than widening the cover. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Re: 5.50 x 16 bias tire question, '36 5 window
It's a spare. Use an old bia-ply. If you need to use when you get a flat, it can then get you there to fix the radial. Put the extra radial tire in the trunk so you can fix it on a long trip (it's not like you'll find one at your local tire shop). But if you are just cruising local, leave it at home.
I don't think changing the cover or running without is the answer. Nice 36! |

Then leave it home and use a bia-ply spare. To me better then hacking up an original spare tire ensemble or going with a fiberglass one. It's just my opinion. I was also just saying the tire only. Tire shop can put it on the wheel. Less someone is sitting in the rumble there is plenty of room, I'd guess if you are on tour you are not running down a hwy with rumble seat passengers. If you are running around town you can get home with a bia-ply. |

Re: 5.50 x 16 bias tire question, '36 5 window
Think about it like them little donut spares that cars come with today. It's just a get it somewhere till you fix it. If you are really farked, call AAA
I have a 6.00 spare on my truck but I run 7.00 tires on my truck. 7.00 wheel and tire will not fit on the spare tire mount. But if I blow a tire I can put it on and drive slowly to a place I can fit it. My suggestion of keeping a spare tire in the trunk was about fixing it on tour. As you probably would not get a replacement quickly. Last edited by Tinker; 08-06-2021 at 12:07 AM. |
