Default generator troubles

I have restored a couple of Model A's and a Model T roadster; it is embarassing to me to have someone look under the hood of my nicely restored "A" and see an alternator -- every other nut and bolt correctly finished. I had given up, starters run forever, horns no problem, I can build almost anything but the @#$$%^& generators seem to self destruct at a very rapid rate when I close the hood. I guess I could talk Tom W. into rebuilding a few for me -- he lives about 80 miles away, I just want to understand the darn things enough to keep them running. I can rebabbitt the engine but can't rebuild the generator, is there a fool-proof system for educating the electrically challenged? Regards, Elmer LaBrash

Ive put well over 100,000 miles on A,s with stock gens & no problems except with some chintzy off-shore cutouts. As I do most of my driving during the day,I adjust the 3rd brush just enough to keep the battery charged.I too dont see the need for an alt unless you have AC or useing non-stock lights.

If I still lived in Rochester would come over and work on your generators. Sorry that you are having so much trouble with them. BTW the engine you rebabbited is still running great.
