Re: 60hp rod bearings
for some reason 40's are very hard to find in all size flatheads. you might want to look for another crank. maybe egge's tech's can help you.

Re: 60hp rod bearings
Thanks for the input and advice. I have been watching E-Bay with no success. Seems like every size but. I found most everything needed for my project, except Rod bearings. Have you ever heard of anyone turning a 1940 crank to 38 specs? Thanks again.

Re: 60hp rod bearings
check getting crank welded back to stock as standard bearing are a lot cheaper & easier to find

Re: 60hp rod bearings
My understanding is that back in the day when they were racing the little 60s everyone wanted the 1940 engine because it had larger journals and were marginally better for that purpose. Hence, they got used up and are harder to find now. Like Walt suggests, if you use the earlier crank, you might have better luck.

Re: 60hp rod bearings
Thanks Walt, I think your way of thinking is right. Thanks Deuce also, all input helps. I'm not known for patience when I decide to tackle a project. Might not be too late to change. I am really not in any hurry. I do wear a hat that says, GIT-ER DONE..... Thanks again

Re: 60hp rod bearings
Call John Saturno in NY at (845) 294-6958. He has a large stock of V8-60 parts. .040" bearings are real hard to find but he might have them. Tell him Gary in Louisiana told you to call him.

Hey, Bernie. Welcome aboard! If New York is a "good road trip", where's home for you? Maybe put it in your Avatar? Maybe?

Thanks for the welcome. Home is in Southern Maine.
NY has 2 cranks available, and is checking to see what dimensions they are. Bernie. |

Re: 60hp rod bearings
Walt, The NY connection said he has a crank, sleves, and valve seats. Neither he nor I know how thick the standard sleve wall would be.(non-thin wall) Any ideas?

Re: 60hp rod bearings
I too have a crank that was cut to .040,(was told--they're listed in the book, shouldn't be a problem) but it has been a long time, don't remember if bearings were found--and don't remember if it was the 37-39, or the 40 type, and there is also possibly a nos crank, I just moved the crankshaft collection(50+ cranks) but havn't sorted them.
From a Ford reconditioning book I can give the bore size for sleeves--the pre-finished tin sleeves--the bore in the block for the sleeve-2.6809-2.6812---which would put the sleeve thickness at about .040, for aftermarket and thick sleeves you should measure them, there is some mention in the book of .060, and .090 thick sleeves, but that could be for the larger engines ---aftermarket sleeves are chosen by size needed and have many sizes, and there are oversize original steel pistons. |

Re: 60hp rod bearings
If you can find the old Federal Mogul and Mamouth numbers I may have them. I still have not sorted all of the NORS bearings. I have about 150 boxes of them to sort when I get to them. Rod

Re: 60hp rod bearings
Thank you all for such great feedback and leads...
So many possibilities are very encouraging, and hopeful. Likely i'm not the first person to become so passionate (for lack of a better word) about a project, that I dove right in without researching the parts supply first. Or the costs associated. And at just how deep in, do you not turn back, and seek an alternate route? I guess my friend has summed it up.." It's NOT A MATTER OF NEEED". Thanks Bernie |

Re: 60hp rod bearings
The only sleeves that I have seen for the 60 were .040 I know they made .090 for the big engine and probably did for the 60. The unaversal sleeves were usually 3/32 and 1/8 Walt

Re: 60hp rod bearings
Couple of ideas: Call Lisa at Then & Now Automotive in Weymouth MA, or Fred Wilner at South Side Obsolete in Faribault MN. They both have vast stores of NOS & NORS stock. The NOS operation of Dennis Carpenter is also a good source to try. Call the regular nuber and ask for the guy in NOS.
