odd tire question
mounting some real heavy 6 ply snow tires on 18" rims for the rear of my 29
rpu. figuring the rear will be lower in the back, in turn putting more weight over the rear. After installing the first tire and putting in 25psi, I am noticing that the tire is not expanding on about 20% of the rim, as if the tire is shrunk.......... will this stretch in the course of a day or two, will it seat when I drive the truck around, or has the tire shrunk to the point of being no good? tires look terrific-but were extremely tough to mount, due to their density. what are your results/opinions? thanks in advance. |

Re: odd tire question
Did you use any lube when installing them? I just use dish soap.

Re: odd tire question
yea ya need lube of some sort.
Tires do get old and dont like to stretch much, might try spraying them with some type of tire conditioner to soften them back up a little.

Re: odd tire question
can you post a pic of your issue?
I wouldnt be mounting or driving on a tire that you dont trust... Sounds like they were stored wrong and dried out badly...

Re: odd tire question
Take a tip from the father on the movie, Big Fat Greek Wedding. Use Windex. It will clean the bugs off your windshield AND help your tires' beads to seat on the rims.

Re: odd tire question
Guys, I am driving these no more then a couple of miles, mostly around the farm.
(always wtd a photo out in the snow!) I like the windex idea! well they are on, now letting them "rest", kind of like a steak! will go back in a couple of days and see if they've settled any.............. thx for the helpful replies. (Mitch, I greased the rim on the second one per your recommendation, as well as the tire and it was a whole lot easier). |

Re: odd tire question
Crank up the air - yep I remember my HS days as a gas jockey - the occasional tube type would still come in and boss always said "don't be shy" - they would pop on eventually...

Re: odd tire question
Same happened to me. One day, a friend dropped in as I was blowing up a tyre after putting it on the rim. As I got to about 80psi, he said something like "look at this gap" as he run his fingers around under the rim. I whacked his arm out of the way and caulked his forearm. He was not happy and became aggressive. I told him to just watch a moment. When the tyre popped into place, the wheel jumped off the ground. He only understood when I asked him what he thought his fingers would be like if they were in there when that happened. He didn't stick around to watch the others.

Re: odd tire question
Take a small container into your local tire shop where you bought your last set of modern car tires and see if you can get some tire lube. Odds are they will just give you some.

Re: odd tire question
I was always taught that oil and grease would cause rubber to deteriorate. I don't know if that is true or not, but I was never allowed to use oil or grease on anything rubber, including tires. Also, dish soap, especially if mixed with water, can cause rust on the rims--remember, some of that soap and water mix is going to get trapped, almost permanently, inside the tire. I was only allowed to use Ru-Glide (sp?) which is a lubricant made especially for mounting tires. Must be something like the Europaste which Mitch mentions above. Note that the can Mitch shows in his picture says "rust inhibitor." Also, only "crank up the pressure" if the wheel is fastened down, like to the tire changer, or in a cage like is used for truck wheels.
I'm certainly an amateur at this, so make your own decisions; don't put too much stock in what I say. I'm only passing along what I was taught, right or wrong, by people who are smarter than me. W. Michael |
