Default Engine "Cough" or Miss

After driving my car on a trip yesterday the engine would cut out for an instant upon acceleration or from a standing stop. It sounded like it lost electrical power but only for a split second. As the trip progressed it would miss upon acceleration when the spark was about 3/4 the way down. If I feathered the gas pedal it was not as bad. Power was good traveled about 48 mph . recently installed new points and set timing. Ran great around town but 1/2 way through this trip (about 200 miles )started acting up. Timing problem?, bad coil (it was very hot to the touch at end of trip)? or bad ignition points or condenser? Any thoughts would be helpful. I did connect a vacuum gauge and got a steady 20 reading with only a slight 1 or 2 degree fluctuation. Runs like crap today when you increase the revs. OK on idle not OK on load.

Did you recheck the points gap?
The rubbing block wears most during the first few hundred miles. Also lube the rubbing block.

Points rub strip worn down and points gap closing down? I have had to adjust my points 3 times in 500 mi. I need to order a new points and cam! Tom types faster :-)

I agree with the others to recheck the basics,, but I would like to add if you have a starter mounted fuse check the connections on it as well as other connections in the junction box and behind the dash.. A Cheap Ignition switch can also cut on and off... A poor circuit connection is more prone to failing when the demand is higher..another thing to look for is are you losing spark, lights / horn momentarily also when the problem occurs...

P.S.
When was the last time we had a firm diagnosis using a vacuum gauge... It's not my tool of choice. You can do better checking any issue using a testlight, spark tester, volt meter, comp gauge, leak Down tester etc etc....

To all of the Ford Barner's I say thanks for all of your suggestions.I proceeded with the following:

1 . I checked fuel supply and carb screen. Good flow, perfectly clean screen at carb inlet.
2. Changed points, condenser, dist. body, cap, and reset timing.
(still ran badly)
3) Changed coil
(still ran badly)
4) While running very rough I opened the jet on carb to about 4 turns and after a few minutes it started to run better but then as expected it ran very rich. I turned the screw in and all smoothed out.
(so I guess there was something blocking the jet that must have been past the filter screen. Runs well in the shop will road test tomorrow.

Now, any suggestions for someone in the NY, CT, NJ or new England area for carb rebuild?

Again thanks so much- this is a great forum.
