Tom Cirello
Don Zig
Joe Hunt.

No, do not have source for Wico jem mag. But searches turn up lots of contact sources for mags in gereral. Such sources are very good at pointing a guy towards what he needs.
I'm thinking that you have a Wico jem 1509, rather than a 1590, eh ?

Hey Chris,
Yeah, I've talked to Rudy in past years. Nice people that do nice work !
Q: Do you run or have you run either of you 1509s and if so, how has that worked for street use ?

I hope you get it like you want and run it ! I'd like to know what you think of the experience of using it for the street. Collector item, yeah, I had 'collected' several 1509s , before seeing that they went to another collector... I've been looking for one that has automatic advance from back in the day. Been told that there ain't such an animal, so FS dist is doing just great , eh

Just a comment, I agree with hardtimes about it may not be a good idea to run a top-drive mag, especially while up in the air. If it slips or jumps time you could be stuck up there all day waiting for a tow! It would be especially likely to be a problem with the impulse still in the mag, it would put a lot of strain on that little drive gear. I run a side-driven mag in my Bonneville engine without an impulse, and it fires up with no problem.

Jim,

you may want to discuss removing the impulse mechanism and talk about starting the motor.

Here is a freeby. https://oldcroak.com/jem-manual/

Parts are not easy to get for the older Wico Jems. Most of the Pietenpol aircraft that used the model A engine ran an crankshaft driven magneto that was more conventional is design. The Pietenpol kit for the engine used a special head for cooling so they moved the mag.

An impulse coupling was built in to the Jem 1509 for starting. There is no other provision for a starting aid unless the mag body can be rotated and connected to the spark control in some way. Starting at full advance will eventually damage the starter due to kick back.

John, The mag must be partially disassembled to remove the impulse, it looks similar to advance weights. In our lakester we use a starter off a Toyota or something, but I also have run that engine on the street using a stock Model A starter running on 12v. In both cases the engine starts right up, no problems. I engage the starter and when the engine is spinning, I flip the ignition switch to 'on'. I'm running 35 degrees advance, it has never kicked back or failed to start. Simple, like me!

Yes, Thanks Jim,
The impulse mechanism I am told was to assist in starting airplanes.
Not to retard the timing, but to give a quick snap of the mag to actually make spark.

And for what its worth, not having to disassemble something to improve it seems like cheating. After all, having left over parts is the whole idea!
