Default Dwell ???

Teaching the grandson " DWELL" he has been adjusting early ford dwell on the machine all week. Block one set of points and adjust dwell then unblock and adjust the other set. Check the advance at ilde and 2500 , let run for a few minutes (listen to the sound it makes ) recheck dwell. i drew distributor on towel ,cam pic showing and explaining dwell is the time the points are closed in degrees using a 45 degree cam ... Crabs, early helmets and late helmets ,Next lesson is how the dual points overlap for total dwell and why..More drawings on towel to come. I think he may be getting it ????????

Jim, next step is to get him into a Early Ford V-8 to own, so he can apply his knowledge hands on that he has learned from his expert mentor!

It seems like when I follow these steps on my Sun machine, I end up with gaps that are smaller than the specs. ??? Trust gaps or dwell??

Also check your Sun dwell meter with a known good one or two to calibrate . Mine was reading a few degrees off .

Always trust dwell, however remember that dwell is the average of rotation and may be a little twisted .

Ex: There are eight lobes on a V8 distributor cam, if one lobe was worn a little bit, lets say it has 28 degrees and there some rust on another with 32 degrees then the average would be 30 degrees.....
The only way to see this is on a machine showing all eight flashes , and even then you are allowed 3 degrees one way or the other ...

Back when i taught this at Lincoln Tech i had a couple distributors where i had ground one lobe off with a grinder and used it for practical exams.
The student had to find it on a running engine with a scope , the dwell was perfect but the actual firing timing per cylinder was way off.....most found it right away !!

Hell Bubba, I'd be happy to wear a shirt . . . I'm an XL! Given the help and contributions to this site, I bet you could sell a pretty good number of them. If you're going to reprint them, do them on a good quality black shirt - they always seem to sell the best. Let me know if you reprint - will buy a couple.

Also, great that your Grandson is interested - not many kids these days know anything of the sort (nor their parents). Most can't ever operate simple hand tools. The sad part is most kids are naturally curious, just that nobody spent the time with them to show them things - to get them involved in things. So - they only learn what the other kids are doing. (Sports and computer games).

I started learning about cars and mechanical things starting at a very early age - because I had neighbors that were experts and my parents supported my curiosity and desire to learn.

Look what it did for "Ron Jon" surf shop. I think they made more money selling tee's then surfboards.

The gap is smaller than the spec on all lobes but the dwell is perfect.
