Default 46 Ford 1.5 ton

Sunday was a beautiful day so we thought we would pull the old truck out of the garage. This is the first time in 20 years that it has moved under its own power. Then we just couldn't resist driving around the block a time or 2. What a thrill to experience all the familiar sounds and smells these trucks have. Still have some items to finish but the cab and chassis is almost complete. Next phase is to install a Gar Wood dump body from my parts truck.

Finally finished the dump bed and got it installed on the truck. I'm really pleased with the way the bed looks on the truck and it makes it ride a little better. Now for some mud flaps and marker lights.

Thanks guys! I think the 8.25x20's in the rear and the 7.50x20's front give the truck a nice stance.
Mark, are the dump bodies you have made by Gar Wood and do you have the hydraulic cylinders? Mine is leaking around the piston with the bed in the down position.
M-H, nice truck! M-H trucks are way cool.

Have you tried repacking the rope seal?

No I haven't but it is on the "to do" list now. Have you ever done this before?

I did the two input shafts, but not the ram itself. I almost think they are meant to leak just a little.

post a picture of the end of the cylinder, there are two types of packing for these cylinders, one is chevron and one is rope, which has been replaced with a Teflon packing. leaking in the down position could be wear on the cylinder--do they leak when raised?

No the piston doesn’t leak when the bed is raised which I thought was odd. I looked at a Gar Wood brochure that has a cutaway pic of my cylinder. It shows a substantial seal on the end of the piston which is probably still in descent shape and able to seal when raising the bed. However, when the bed is down the fluid is now ahead of this seal and leaks past the packing around the piston. This system doesn’t have a separate hyd reservoir. I wonder if I overfilled the cylinder?EAC4E737-58D9-48BD-8C63-4B9AF32C66C6.jpeg
I’ll get a better pic of the end of the hyd cylinder. There is a collar around the piston secured with 2 studs and nuts. I assume this is where the packing is.

Mine leaked about half a pint after I lowered the bed. Had some air bubbles also. I’m wondering if I overfilled the cylinder.
