Default Flexible Magnetic Pick-Up Tool

Any observations on such tools?

Earlier today I thought I had dropped a lock washer into the bell housing. Found it later about six feet away on the concrete floor where it had rolled under an obstruction. Anyway, it got me thinking about retrieval tools.

I have 2 of the telescopic magnetic tools and 2 of the gripper tools, I call them pickle gitters. Couldn't do without them.

I have a flexible magnetic.
My starter spring bolt broke off and fell down into the fly wheel housing. The flexible magnetic was the thing I used to retrieve the broken bolt through the starter hole.

Both Sears and Home Depot sell a magnet the size of a .22 shell mounted on a wire looking like a thick length of solder that is easily put under the flywheel to rescue Bendix parts.
The modern Bendix eliminates its need, but I carry it in the car to help others.

A magnetic pick up wand is essential when rebuilding a transmission tower. The installation of the pins that go in the forks is an exercise in manual dexterity. It is inevitable they will be dropped into the mechanism several times and will have to be fished out with a magnet.

I sure wish they would invent a brass and aluminum magnet. Then my toolbox would be complete. For now, I have to make do with a wad of dumdum on a stick or wire for those non-magnetic items. You can never have too many tools. I have retrieved things using various small diameter tubes attached to a shop vac.

What I have used is a small magnet such as you will find in the end of some smallpocket screwdrivers, push this into the end of a lenth of small diameter vacuum line , this will drop down around corners easily and will also twist around in the area you believe the object is.
