51 Merc sedan power seat wiring
Anyone have a wiring diagram and pic for wiring a 51 Merc power seat? Also is there a cross over track that would work?

Re: 51 Merc sedan power seat wiring
You need to get a fully updated copy of the Lincoln Mercury Overhaul Manual for the 1949 thru 51 cars. It's mostly a hydraulic powered set up along with the windows. The door switches operate solenoid valves to the various hydraulic cylinders. A full hydraulic system would be the convertible which has hydraulic seats, windows, and top. The Lincoln models had more power stuff as a general rule but Mercury cars less so. They were an option but you don't run into them equipped that way very often.

I knew the convertible tops were hydraulic, but did not know the seats and windows were too. Lear something new every day. |

Re: 51 Merc sedan power seat wiring
Just an observation. In 1973, I bought a really clean '48 Buick "Super" convertible out of Montana that had a blown engine. I bought a driveable '53 Special (263" vs 248") and had it rebuilt and put it into the '48. It was a great running, driving car. Then it was time for bodywork and paint the all of the other stuff. That car had what was called a "Hydro-Electric" system, in which the power windows, power seat, and the convertible top system were all actuated by a large pump located under the passenger side front fender. The system used brake fluid to run all of this stuff (and you all know what brake fluid does if a leak develops). I tried at the time to find the proper repair parts for the system, and, back in those days, nothing was available.
I ended up selling the car for what I had in it (after one glorious summer with a little "Hippy" girlfriend I had at the time). (It also involved a case of "Boone's Farm" Apple wine.) Hopefully, your car does not have a full "Hydro-Electric" system. |

It's been a lot of years since the Mid Century Mercs were produced. Folks like to alter them in all sorts of ways. It's always possible that some later model stuff was adapted to work in there by some previous owner.
