What does the AR designation mean in early Model A Fords? |

A means it's the first design of that part. R means it has been replaced by a new design but this part needs to be kept for REPAIRS. The early 1928 wheels are a good example of an AR part.
You could also have a BR part, if the part was the second design and needed to be kept for repairs. |

The move is on to change the thinking from AR model A's to E28 Model A's, just like body style A400 should be 400A.
