Default 1930 Top Wood Padding to Body?

I have a 1930 Tudor Sedan and I've read in a few places that there should be some kind of padding between the wood and outer body. When I removed the old wood there were remnants of a felt-like material on the side rails where the top nails in; but nowhere else. Les Andrews' book mentions the need for some kind of material in the forward to the top wood installation instructions but he doesn't show anything in the pictures or mention again in the detailed instructions. Likewise i don't see any reference to this material being sold with or separate from top wood kits. Thirdly I've looked through Brent's outstanding build summaries several times and i don't see any padding going into his cars.

Can someone help identify if the padding is necessary, what type is ok to use and where it should be used? I have constructed all the top wood myself so I don't have a top wood supplier to call.... Thanks!

We do use felt on rare occasions but typically we are using seam sealer that comes from automotive stores. Only a tiny bead is needed. The felt was original, but for us the seam sealer is done as method to shave costs. If you want to be more authentic, use some roofing felt paper cut into thin strips, then glued onto the wood.

You're welcome.

BTW, your wood craftsmanship looks good from the pictures. A lot of time goes into accurately fabricating and installing wood doesn't it??

Yes it does, but at this phase of my life with two kids in college i have more time than money! It was a bit of forensics working from the few rotten scraps of what was left of the old wood (my car had no top material for years when i bought it) and pictures on the internet to make the new parts fit but very rewarding to be able to see the finished product.
