'49 Hard to start
Stock '49 hard to start first thing in morning. If I touch the gas or the choke it just won't fire. If don't touch anything but the starter it (usually) eventually fire. After it warms up it starts and runs fine rest of day. Carb is about a year old and all the wiring is new. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated before I go "tearing" into something.
Thanks |

Re: '49 Hard to start
I think the gas is draining back to the tank. I do not have the name or address, but one of the other guys will have it, but someone is making the flexible lne to the fuel pump witha check valve in it. I bet it will solve your problem

Re: '49 Hard to start
Not sure if the 49 has the on/off switch but Before you turn the car "on" give it a few cranks of the starter. This will get gas to/in the carb if it is empty for whatever reason. Then flip the switch on and touch it off. Good to go. I have to start my 41 like that if it sits for a few weeks.

Re: '49 Hard to start
Sounds to me like its already got too much gas in there, and by using the choke or pumping the gas pedal just adds more....possibly leaking thru a defective economizer valve overnight.

I agree with the economizer valve suggestion above. |

Re: '49 Hard to start
does the engine lope and run rough at first? does it blow black smoke out the exhaust? if yes i think the carb is draining itself into the intake manifold over nite and flooding the engine, if the answer is no then i think the suction valve in the fuel pump is bad and not sealing and letting the gas from the needle and seat all the way back thru the fuel pump drain to the tank, turn over that disk , the suction disk, its a hard round plastic looking thingwith a little spring on top of it and it may stop, or buy a rebuild kit or new pump, the inline fuel check valve is just a micky mouse fix, fix it right

Re: '49 Hard to start
Pull the carb. off, remove the bottom throttle section, put some gas in the bowl then set it on a folded paper towell in a safe place, leave it for a while and see if it leaks onto the towell. if so replace the power valve and or gasket. I like the nylon gaskets, also check the bowl & base for warpage.
