Default Scraping squeak when shifting

Just toook my 36 cabriolet for a ride. Noticed a scraping squeaking noise when shifting. I determined it was not coming from the gear box. In neutral, when I move the shift lever from side, I get the noise. Seems like it is coming from the ball at the base of the shift rod which is surrounded by a chrome collar. I don't see any obvious way to lubricate this area. Does the chrome collar lift up or should I just try to drip some oil down there.

Thanks for any help.

Un screw the cap and you will see a second cup shaped washer under the cap and a spring. I would grease the top of the cupped washer and the underside of the cup and after re assembly, wipe off any excess. Be careful of the pin on the passenger side, you DON'T want to knock it down into the gearbox.

The collar is screwed into place and there is a spring and some additional hardware under the collar. remove the collar and lift the spring and washers up and you can lube with oil without removing the shift lever. If you want to pull the lever up and out of the transmission do so in Neutral position and be aware there is a 1/4" pin on the side of the threads for the collar, DO NOT DROP THIS PIN INTO THE TRANSMISSION! only the collar you remove and the shift lever hold the pin in place. If you remove the lever you can lube with some grease.

Have you checked the lube level in the transmission??? Perhaps it is very low and nothing is getting splashed up into the shifter tower

Kurt,

Did not check transmission oil level.

Last fall I did change the trans oil. The car has not been driven much, and there is no evidence of a leak, so I'm thinking oil level is good.

It sounds to me like your clutch pedal is scraping against the floorboard. Have you checked the clearance there? KISS

i work on modern cars, a used car dealer has us check every rear and trans for fluid levels---most of these cars are only a few years old and perfectly dry underneath, yet it is surprising how many are low----just because they don't look like they are leaking doesn't mean it is full

also the trans oil migrates into the u-joint housing, from there if the seal is bad it can go into the rear (my A does this, no trans leaks, but the rear has never been apart and the driveshaft seal is bad, I have to drain the rear and fill the trans)
