Default Tube Valve Stem Size

Does anyone happen to know the thread size for a inner tube valve stem cap? It is finer than 5/16-24. I see McMaster-Carr has 5/16-18, 20, 24, 27, 28, 32, 40 tpi. Not sure why there are so many different sizes in 5/16" threads.

I need to clean up the threads on a couple nickel valve caps.

Thanks

Just went to the workshop and measured it for you - 32 tpi.

Awesome. Thanks Synchro. I'll order one up. I don't think the local Ace will have that size.

Looking at McMaster-Carr prices, I was hoping it was a 5/16-32 as opposed to a 5/16-28 (or another odd size). They want $8.07 for a 5/32 bottoming tap compared to $23.81 for a 27, 28 or 40!

No worries, Y.
32 tpi is probably cheaper exactly because it is so widely used on valve stems.

There is a valve stem tool available, it is very handy. I have several one for the shop and one in my roadside tool kit. Clears thread on valve stems

He is needing a tap to clean up his caps, not the valve stem.
