Grand Cherokee rear to 1935
I think I remember Ol’Ron mentioning a while ago theJeep Grand Cherokee dana/spicer 44a with 3.73 was a good inexpensive choice to convert ‘34-‘40 to, Anyone know what yrs Grand Cherokees work?

No, But 3:73 seems a little low unless your using a T 5. I’m putting a 9” Ford in my 35 with a 3:00 ratio. 1940 transmission with open drive conversion.

Re: Grand Cherokee rear to 1935
I've got a 03 GC, and it does NOT have a 44. I wish it did. And, whatever rear I have, is 3.73. I live in the mountains, and 3.73 (with OD) works good for me.
Seems to me that an Exploder rear would also be a good choice. |

Re: Grand Cherokee rear to 1935
The 44a has disk brakes and posi from 96 through 06?? not sure if they were used after that date. THey come with 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, except for 99 thru 02 when they switched to 5 on 5 bolt pattern. Weight of axle is aproc the same as the 8" Ford. Biggest advantage of the 44a is price and availability. abetter option would be the Dana 35 from the GC, it's substantially lighter than the $$ 0r the 8". For a passenger car the weight of the rear axle controls ride quality and you;ll never break it with a flathead. I use light springs and mid 80" camaro chevelle 70/30 shocks

Re: Grand Cherokee rear to 1935
I'm gonna make a guess... My 03 GC is a 6 cyl, and does NOT have a D44. Perhaps it's V8 GC's that have the Dana 44 ?? Or maybe it's MODEL related. Mine is a Laredo.
And, to Anthony, above, My GC DOES have disc brakes on the rear. And, it's 4x4, if that makes any difference. (There is such a thing as 2wd, although VERY rarely seen around my parts.) |

Re: Grand Cherokee rear to 1935
TJ, Thx 4 suggestion. I saw the Parallel leaf kit but Speedway also has this bolt in 4 link kit. I was thinking check 2 c if I can get w/o Currie 9” housing. Might go w parallel kit, Probably is less modification. I sure there’d b some cut & weld mods w the Dana 35 with either! https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Bolt-...Kit,81350.html

Re: Grand Cherokee rear to 1935
With the leaf springs you may have to move the axle pads. With coil overs I have found that they are difficult to find the correct spring rates to make the car ride correctly whether it is loaded with passengers or luggage or just has one person behind the wheel. I'm not a big fan of coil overs on the '35 and up cars.

Re: Grand Cherokee rear to 1935
I've known of two different '98 GCs with V8, and both have had bad rear end problems. Both low mileage, both OLD fuddy-duddy drivers....NO SMOKEY BURN-OUTS! DD
