Looking for the best way (least expensive) to ship a pair of front fenders from Maine to California. Suggestions or anyone going that way?

If your for "less expensive" that's very relative.
No way it will be cheap
Fedex freight has worked well for me before
Greyhound has been good some; atrocious some. Least expensive likely
Truck would work but have to skid and protect. Great exposure to damage
I've heard of folks using forwarders
Forget UPS imho

I think here in N.England Greyhound is out haven't seen a Greyhound for 40yrs. My
son has been using Fastnal hope I spelled it right. He had a whole front clip in one
piece shipped from Texas and this is a 1949 F8 Ford hood and all for around $200. But
items will have to be picked up at their terminal. >UPS Fedex outrageous.

FedEx freight...
I had a cabby rear section (broken down) and doors shipped from CA to TN by them in a wooden crate. It was less than $600 all way cross country.
Had a full cabby body shipped from Idaho. It was palletized and wrapped. Cowl taken loose and put in tub. Was on a common carrier and less than $600.
I didn't feel too abused.

I used to work for the predominant overnight shipper who shall remain nameless. I would never ship any freight through them. I have seen way to many crates come crashing down from 7 feet above and heard way too much crunching. Speed always took precedence over care.

I just shipped a radiator to Bert's for recoring on Monday. I used FedEx Ground and it cost just over $100! I almost fainted. I had figured around $50. So much for that. I assumed that it was too big/heavy for USPS. That was probably not the case, but they are mobbed this time of year. I will plan better next time.

Fastenal...I've shipped fenders, mounted tires and rims, radiators, etc.
you need to secure to a pallet and drop off at a Fastenal store.


The buyer pays freight charge when he picks up...no charge to seller, so this works out well for both parties with a minimum of fuss. give them a call, they have over 2000 locations in the US.

That's interesting. It costs US$250 to ship a radiator to OZ here.

When shipping fenders by Fastenal, how were they packaged (crated) for shipment? I had read somewhere that they would not ship sheet metal parts.

I just shipped two fenders to Ma from KY for $175.00 by Fastenal. It was 650 by UPS freight. When you ship by Fastenal it has to be on the pallet with nothing hanging over. I built a crate 5 feet long and two feet wide then just made the bottom like a pallet so the forks would go under. Dropped them off at the local Fastenal and the buyer picked them up at their local fastenal. Really easy and fast. I wouldn't hesitate using them again.

I've used Greyhound with good results. Fenders, not wrapped.

Not so great ending to my shipping story.

I had a good box, well packed, but it was not much larger than the height of the radiator. It arrived at Bert's with both tanks dented. Just not enough room to take the abuse of shipping. And to think that I paid over $100 for this priviledge.

The problem was the size of the box. I guess I probably needed 6" or more at each tank end. I only had a few inches, packed with foam, but not enough to prevent damage. An expensive lesson, for sure. Bert's also told me that during the holidays, with the volume, packages really take a beating.

Every Home Depot in America cycles acres of different types (and sizes) of perfect wooden pallets, in-and-out, every day. It can't hurt to ask..... Try the Garden Dept and/or the Pro Desk... Now some ASMs will say no, they're all 'supposed' to, (and they're not 'supposed' to take tips...) But it's my experience that since Model A owners are persuasive folks, all you have to do is remind them of their motto... "You can do it! We can help!" TallyHo
