Default Fires in California

Very sad site to see a burned out 1956 Ford Thunderbird. In addition to the cars, there are the homes and a lifetime of memories in photos and other keepsakes. Then, these car guys would have lots of memorabilia, tools etc collected over a lifetime. How does one start up again? And that is only from a males perceptive. The ladies would also have lost special items that were dear to their hearts. It is very sad that many lives have also been lost during these dark and testing days. Our thoughts and prayers are with these suffering families in California.

I flew from Boise, Idaho to San Diego, California earlier today. As we flew over Yosemite and the Sierras, there was smoke all around us in all directions. Approaching L.A. was the same.

Thoughts and prayers to all affected.

This is really a sad situation. So much loss of lives and property.
The death toll is in the 30's now, but hundreds are still missing.

Thanks to all the brave fire fighters, they are all heroes.

Yes as Lanny has said. No words can convey the loss. No amount of prayer is enough.....

Systematic de-forestation and re-planting could easily prevent most and possibly all destruction of property and loss of life due to wildfires, but the militant environmentalists in California won't let the lumberjacks touch a single brittle tree branch. Yet after a fire has already started, they'll send firefighters out to perform control burns in an effort to keep the fire from spreading further. Huge cost to the taxpayers for tanker aircraft and firefighting personnel and equipment, which could all be un-necessary if they would allow private lumber harvesters to come back in and perform systematic de-forestation. The political leadership out there is all upside down and backwards. The people are paying a heavy price.

I also heard that they had a State law that says for every tree cleared by the lumberjacks, the company was required to plant four (not exactly sure of the quantity) new trees in the area. Of course that law is irrelevant now that all de-forestation is outlawed.
I think the old rule made much more sense. They should allow patches of forests to be cut down for timber in areas large enough that a wildfire would be un-able to jump all across the entire forest. Then after the new trees got to be about ten years old, allow them to come back in and cut down trees adjacent to the areas previously harvested. Then re-plant in the new patch. Repeat every ten years or so. If they did this, it would be impossible for a fire to burn down an entire forest.

What Dave said is correct.
That is going to change soon, I expect.
This AM on the news: People dressed as Forest Workers now looting homes/property.
Sad
Death toll stands at 48 as of 9:00 am. Many , Many missing
We're about 35 miles from the Paradise area.

Sorry to see pictures of private car collections being burned. I've seen a few others, besides the one in this thread. I feel the pain, personally, because in the recent hurricane, Florence, my '56 Ford Club Sedan, that I'd had for 35 years, was totaled, as was my Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is hard to realize its gone. I know that I didn't lose a life, and I'm very grateful for that, believe me, but, still, it was sad to see my Club Sedan destroyed. I feel badly for those in California who are losing their houses, and "old" cars. Sad.

Dave is spot on, the tree huggers have made a bed they are really unhappy with and don't want to lie down in it. Instead blame "global warming".

So-called GLOBAL WARMING is as a result of Gov. MOONBEAM and others like him, these continual fires warming the atmosphere.

It will be nationwide in ten to twenty years, so get ready for it.

But I can see the reforestation efforts, if done in a thoughtful manner.

You can try but it isn't much different anywhere else you can go. I thought it was better here in the PNW 20 years ago. It's all the same shit but in a different shape.

Last I heard it was 600+ missing. One town was mentioned it had a lot of retirees.
This is one terrible tragedy.

Paradise is the town. Mobile homes parked butt to butt, houses stacked so close together you can spit on your neighbor from the middle of your yard and heavy "forestation" right up to the back door. The speed of the fire spreading is due to the wind (not a new thing in CA). Feel for those folks, no way to understand what they are going through and I think it will get uglier before it gets better.

I have a brother-in-law that lives in San Diego. He and his wife love it there (originally a farm boy from WI) and will die there. His $650K 2br/1 & 1/2 bath house is in a neighbor hood that dings him for $ if he leaves his garage door open. He can mow his lawn with a hand shears and not finish one beer! Don't understand but it gets back to "a seat for every butt"........

Was looking at Google Maps and saw this 1956 Ford F100 in Paradise, California from Google Street Views. Very neat looking truck. Wonder if it and the owner survived?
