Default What engine is this?

While on a parts quest I saw this engine. The guy had a couple of ford trucks (56 and 58) that it may have came out of. If someone has an idea what this is, I'll take a trip back to have another look.

Does not look like a Ford engine. The big Ford trucks before the Yblock used Lincoln engines but the ones shown don't look like them either (at least the valve covers don't look like the Lincoln).

The carburetor is a Stromberg WW two barrel. Chrysler products used this carb in the 50's and 60's.
Also, there appears to be casting numbers on the cyl. head and intake manifold. If you post those numbers, maybe someone could help identify it.

The first picture looks like an Olds engine and the second one looks like an Studebaker engine.

40 Deluxe,
You are correct. It was late last night when I posted. I still think it is Studebaker.

Stude 289. I had one in a '57 Golden Hawk.

Stude never had a 327. That was Nash (Rambler) starting in1957 (NOT a Chevy engine, as some mistakenly think!).

I have to agree with the Studebaker too, since they also used Stromberg WW two barrel carbs.

Those old Studebaker 289 engines were hell for stout. The only draw backs were that they were big & heavy for the displacement they had and never caught on for lots of aftermarket speed goodies. They have beefy main bearings and forged steel crankshafts. I think they figured on high compression for that engine since it was made to take upwards of 13:1.

Thanks to everyone who replied to ID my engine photos. I will notify the owner. Maybe he can sell it to someone doing a Studebaker project. The transmission next to it is a 3 speed with OD.

If the transmission is a T-85 (side cover rounded on the bottom) it's pretty valuable in and of itself. Stude used a different tailshaft and yoke arrangement from the Ford version but the innards, governor and solenoid are the same.

That is a 259. A 1963-64 vintage. The T-85 trans was used only on the high performance cars.

Just curious but how can you tell? I think Studes were all the same block regardless of displacement.

In spite of working in a Ford dealership for nearly 20 years, I did own several Chevs, and many Studes. I was very active for many years in Studebakers. They, like every other engine, have various distinguishing items on them that most times, leads to a conclusion. The yellow valve covers, were for the most part, were used in 63-64, but not exclusively. The carb also was. But based on that, and the front of the motor, with thermostat housing, and a couple of other things, leads me to a 63-64. They were also the most common engine. 289s were about as common as 312s. EVERYONE had one in their car. I am trying to dispose of all my y-block and Ford stuff in general in order to get back into Studes one last time before it's too late. Unfortunately, I have not been able to sell much. The junk man has gotten most of it so far.

When Studebaker was dying on the vine, as a last gap measure they moved production to Canada and started using Chevy 283's for the last couple years. But before that, they had their own V8 as pictured on this thread.

You are aware of the yblocks Forum? List it there. Shame to go to scrap.

The advantage to scrapping the stuff is, I don't have to package it up, and take it to the shipper, and then share the shipping expenses. And the scrapper pays almost as much as the "collectors" are willing to pay.

I agree. I've had some stuff that I ended up giving away because there aren't even any scrappers close enough to me to make it worth the hassle.

Hopefully, your fellow STUDE enthusiasts won't have the same opinion.
