Default intake manifold gasket question

I usually install intake gaskets with permatex gasket sealer/cement That is not my question....But should I use a small amount of silicone around the water outlets on both sides of the gasket (head and intake) sides? Or no silicone at all? Anyone have great success with or without the silicone? both sides?

Default Re: intake manifold gasket question

If you are working on a Y block, I would just spray WD 40 on both sides, then tighten carefully. I have seen blue goo hang in gobs in the areas where there should be nothing.

If by 'silicone' you are referring to -

Permatex® Sensor-Safe Blue RTV Silicone Gasket Maker

Category: Gasket Makers

OEM specified. The original Permatex Blue now with low odor formula. Will not foul oxygen sensors. Replaces almost any cut gasket. Makes reliable “formed-in-place” gaskets that resist cracking, shrinking and migrating. Coats pre-cut gaskets to increase reliability. Temperature range -65°F to 500°F (-54°C to 260°C) intermittent; resists auto and shop fluids.

No, that is a gasket maker. I have never understood since this was introduced why it is used along with a gasket.

If you are concerned with coolant leakage, lightly coat the openings in the gasket (coolant) with No. 2 PERMATEX.

I once had a carb overhaul on a 73 COUGAR 351CJ and the previous guy had assembled it with RED RTV. The stuff had been sucked into the engine.
