Default How to disassemble hand throttle lever

Hi,

My hand throttle lever is not fixed in its notches anymore, it slips up, so I can't increase idle at a cold engine start. I think, the notches are worn and also the springs at the bottom of the rods.

Do you have any recommendations how to disassemble the hand throttle unit and what do do with the slipping hand throttle lever?

Thanks

Mine is stiff from old age, so even though the notches are worn, the lever stays where I set it. You need to tap out the pins in the levers at the bottom of the spark and throttle rods. Then you can pull the rods out the top. I would use a slightly dull chisel and set the column on an anvil then punch the grooves back into the metal. Some people file the grooves, but I'd rather not remove more metal by filing. The chisel will move the metal to form the grooves. If the rods are flat where they contact the column, then you can buy new rods for not much money, or weld up the wear and get them replated.

BTW, I would remove the steering to do this work.

May need to replace the spring at the bottom end of the lever. That'll give it some extra pull down to the column notches.

I have to pull the choke & throttle levers out to put a felt (or rubber) piece to keep that annoying rattle from happening. But don't you have to pull the steering wheel off?

Take a hammer and give the quadrant "ear" a couple whacks from behind. This will force the metal upwards and increase the pressure against the throttle lever on the quadrant. Keep hammering until you have achieved good resistance between the two, sufficient to keep the lever from riding upwards.
This is not an ideal "fix", but until you remove the column and disassemble it to restore its operation, my suggestion will work. If your quadrant's notches are so worn that they cannot keep the throttle lever in place, I imagine the whole unit needs some work someday.
By the way, this suggestion works better with the seven-tooth columns because the quadrant "ears" are larger.

Look at the rods were they touch the "V" notches at the top of the quadrant,...they are
probable flattened from wear.

Either replace the rods with repops(bad idea),..or repair and Nickle the old ones(better idea).

Thanks for your input, I think, I will try the "hammer to ear" method first and have to restore the unit in near future.

Don't worry about ruining the quadrant ear by hammering to bend it. When you disassemble the column later for rebuilding, you can always tap the ear back to its original shape.
