Default 1930 Cowl Welting

Any tricks/best methods of installing the fuel tank and cowl welting on a 30-31?

Thanks, Steve

There's an article in one of the early "How to Restore Your Model A" editions (Maybe #3??). It was many years ago when I did it but I recall using clothes pins (the ones with springs) to hold the welting to the tank rim. I stapled long strips of fabric to the welting which allows you to pull it into position once the tank is dropped in. It worked well. You'll probably also need to cut some relief notches into the banding to allow it to bend around the tank without crimping the bead. Check the Restorer's index to find the article.

If you use staples, be sure the folds of the staple are on the welting side, so the staples pull out when you pull the fabric strips away. I used tape when I helped my friend do his 1931 CCPU. It takes time and a bit of fiddling around, but it came out nice. I'd hate to do it without a helper though.

The strips of fabric that are staples/attached are helpful but it is still a challenge. and extra set of hands would be the biggest help

This may be a good place to ask, who makes the best welting for the 30-31? If you plan to go through trouble of installig it you might as well use the best. Bob

Hi Steve,

we have done that just last saturday, pictures are not jet on our web page. We followed the following procedure:

1. Lay the welting on the gas tank to mark the hole locations, fix with clothes pegs.
2. Cut the corners to enable an easier fit on the corners.
3. Punch holes
4. Lay welting on gas tank and attach gas tank filler piece with four screws.
5. Place tank in cowl, we did not use stapled cloth, we managed to fit the welting with our fingers. But it was essential to do it with two persons.

We will paint the tank after assembly, so we didnt have to take care of the paint. Unfortunately we had to realize that the firewal was dent, so we attached a tension belt to pull out the firewall.

We bought the welting at Macs, seems to be good quality.

Hope this helps,
Michael
