I installed a new Snyder's head today. Seems to idle better, will check it out on the road tomorrow.

Even the 5.5 makes my Townsedan move better than the stock head.

Seems to me the last place I would look for an idle issue is a head, unless it was cracked.

I had a good idle with the other head also. This seems to be a little smoother. Could be just my perception. I had no issues with the engine, just wanted a HC head. The CR is 5.5.

Just curious if you installed the head straight out of the box or did you have to have it surfaced first? Just purchased a 6.1 from Snyders but not ready to install it yet.

Checked with metal straight-edge, then installed out of box with black head gasket. Torqued to 55 #, let it run until warm, then torqued again. Will drive it when it gets a little warmer.

Just came back from a 5 mile run up and down hills and through traffic lights. Better up the hills and less shifting than before as expected. No leaks. According to PIRANIOS web site, with a model b carburetor, ported out manifold, I have near 55 hp. Very pleased.

Would like to know how the head was finished and what did it measure? I purchased a 5.5 CR from Snyder's some time ago. When I received it the length of the head was short by about 3/16. I complained and they sent another one. Second one was same way. I complained again and they made arrangements for me to send both back, no charge to me along with my original purchase price. Excellent customer service. Perhaps 3-4 moths later I heard that they had a different batch of heads (correct size) completed so I purchased another one. This time the side of the head was gouged from perhaps a die grinder cleaning up the slag on the sides. I sent that one back also with another full refund. I still order from them!

My question is are they CORRECTLY made now?

The head was perfectly smooth on the bottom surface and the top surface was nice enough to paint without preparation. There was very light surface rust on the bottom surface, just enough to turn color. I wire brushed it and it was like new. In all, I am totally pleased with the head and how it performed. Per the instructions, I did not use sealer on the head. The head fit perfectly.

All this got me thinking so I just went out and unboxed the new 6.1 head. Lay'd a stock head next to it and it measured out about the same in length. Like 29 said, the finish looks great and close to stock and using a good straight edge I have, it looked very flat. About 4 or 5 weeks before I can get to it then I can see how it lines up with the holes. I did buy new studs also. Now, maybe a stipe 330 cam while its apart.
