Default Engine and frame numbers

Hello fellow Barners, Please help me with my memory. When Model A's were built, didn't engine and frame numbers match ??? Thanks for your help.

When the engine left the break-in line it was stamped with a number. When the engine was dropped in the frame some time later, the engine number was stamped on the frame rail...

I agree with Jim Mason, and from what I understand, the number on the engine is used as the VIN for the vehicle, even if the numbers do not match the frame. When I was 16, DMV allowed me to register my car with the tracing of the number from the engine.
