Very Tangled: Congratulations on the new word! The paternoster was fairly widely used in Europe in office buildings. It was an "open" elevator that ran continuously, slowly enough that you could step into it, and step off on your desired floor - we threatened "newbees" that if they did not get off on the top or bottom floors, the unit would turn them upside down......not true, of course, but more than one refused to ride until they figured it out! Of particular interest was the 66th Military Intelligence Group Headquarters in Munich, Germany....that paternoster dated back to the late 30's, and was quite noisy on occasion. Google the word, and you will find a biblical history and meaning, as well.
Greetings to you, my friend, and a Happy Blessed New Year!

Very similar device was at the La Salle parking garage in downtown Chicago. The spot the drivers stood on was about 12 inches square.Must have been an interesting ride, as the building was 6 or 8 stories tall.

Those are some great pics.
I never knew anything like this existed!
I was curious how it would possibly work,,then DD put up his animated illustration.
Very clever,,,,I wonder if the new Carvana deal works the same way ?

And then you have this "almost-the-same" as a PATERNOSTER, but not quite...the FALKIRK WHEEL in Scotland. It raises and lowers boats 115 feet between the levels of two different canals. Takes about 4 minutes for the ride. DD

In the cornish mines they used to have a similar device called a "man engine". The big beam engine used to stroke up and down and the miners used to jump on and off the vertically reciprocating shaft.

There's a Automobile vending machine off the 10 Freeway in Ontario California. Quite a curious sight!
