Default 36 gas guage on 12 volts

I just bought a 36 coupe, and the gas guage is not working. Do I need a resistor in line with the sending unit for 12 volt operation?

No, the current path is through the gauge to the sender and then to ground. There should be a voltage drop added at the input to the gauge.

Thanks. There is a resistor in the input line. I tested the circuit, and the sending unit is dead, or has sank to the bottom. The only floats I have are cork, and they are no good, since the alcohal in the gas melts the shelac on the cork, and they then sink. I need to find a modern float before I pull the sending unit out of the tank.

You can get original style hollow brass floats from several suppliers I believe. An example for $12. C & G says around $5.

I will pull the sender out of the tank and see if it still works, and if not, I see a new one is $35.

2 many,
A good float from a Ford 94 carb works quite well, it will however require
soldering to the arm.

See this thread concerning replacement of the cork float > https://fordbarn.com/forum/showthrea...l+sender+float
