Maybe a new one would be better?

You can do many repairs with kitchen items.. baking soda, oatmeal, pepper, pork rind, mothballs, lye..candles are as handy as a pocket on a shirt.

Warning, the womenfolk don’t take kindly to greasy draw knobs and parts washed in the dishwasher..

I only use the dishwasher to wash parts when my wife is away for a few days. The detergent does an excellent job of etching aluminum part for paint. If I had the room I would add a portable dishwasher to my shop. i did an outboard motor this way, not the engine but the parts that extend to the propeller.

gotta believe a new one was simply not available, otherwise this fix, while very cool, is too labor-intensive......

I'd like to know why it broke in the first place.

A similar process to what I do to produce replica parts by the lost wax process but I doubt it would work on a Model A timing gear. The fibrous nature of the material used absorbs oil so the repair wouldn't bond to it.
