rebuilding 47 flathead
Looking for suggestions from people who have more smarts about these engines. Compression is from 70-85 original wiring needs replaced too. Thanks

Re: rebuilding 47 flathead
How much work are you planning to do yourself?, if you take it apart yourself you still need to find a good machine shop to clean the block and check for cracks to see if it is rebuildable, once you have that data you can decide on how to proceed. As for your electrical problems, the 8 volt battery is a red flag, do a tune up, replace any bad wiring, make sure your connections are bright and tight, check you fuel system. My Dad always told me all you need is compression, spark, and fuel to make it run. Tackle each component one at a time and you won't get overwhelmed by what needs to be done.

Did it come with a car? Is it in a car? What are you going to use it for? All will determine any suggestions.

It as we know from buyer it is original to car it is a hope to be an original restoration with some safety upgrades. Do know block and heads need redone because not touched in 67 yrs what it have original look keeping engine like new.

Re: rebuilding 47 flathead
I agree with Russ. Not much to lose if it runs well. If it hasn't run in a while the compression might increase some with a little driving.

My 36 with 95,000 miles has the same compression. Runs smooth and quiet as a watch with a slight oil leak. I just drive it and enjoy it.
