Re: 1928 gas cap
It does not look ground off, but it's not a rough casting. Where else do I look for a s/n?

Re: 1928 gas cap
How about posting some pictures of your truck, may help to date it.

Yep, you can see the straight lines where the mill made a few passes to mill off the old number.
I wonder if a needle scaler would roughen it enough to make it look more original? |

Re: 1928 gas cap
A few older pics, I know I have a 29 steering column, headlights, and fuel tank. Probably can't tell much by the pictures.

Or the date stamp on the fuel tank/firewall?

Re: 1928 gas cap
You have a 30/31 frame for your 28 pickup. 30/31 front crossmembers and emergency brake shafts are different from 28/29 frames. 28/29 emergency brake shafts mount inside the frame, where as 30/31 shafts go through the frame. 30/31 frames have a lower place where the radiator mounts. You can use a 30/31 frame for a 28/29, but you will need to shim the radiator up some. Also 28 frames had forged runningboard brackets where as 29 - 31 have stamped brackets. However they are interchangeable.

Re: 1928 gas cap
Well the plot thickens. I sure do appriciate the input from people who know. My goal is a nice driver so hopefully I can make the chassis work with the 28 body. I guess the 29 parts on the 28 makes sense now since the frame is 30/31. At any rate the truck was complete and assembled when I got it, so this mis-matching must have happened long ago.

Re: 1928 gas cap
The "square" cab was used 28 to mid-30. The 30 models had the 1/4-turn gas cap (on the 28-29 style tank) and the 30-31 style steering wheel - dunno if the headlights were 28-29 or 30-31. Can't tell for sure from your pic but it looks like the steering wheel might be 30 - the 28-29 is "dished" a bit in the center whereas the 30-31 is flat.
You could have an assembly of parts from different vehicles. OTOH, you have a 30-31 style frame, maybe a 30-31 style steering wheel, and a 29-29 style gas tank with 1/4-turn cap (found ONLY on early-30 trucks AFAIK) - those clues point to an early-30. What makes you think it's a 28? Do you have a title and if so, does it say 28? It could have been changed over the last 77+ years - mistakes can happen when ownership changes and a new title is issued. |

Re: 1928 gas cap
Checking the title as I recall it said 1928. So if I have the early 30 tank and that early 30 steering wheel does that mean that the frame is possibly the right frame for this truck or is my frame definitely from a late 30 31 truck?

Re: 1928 gas cap
From what's been pictured, I'd say your truck was between March and June of 1930.
I don't have my STANDARDS handy, but the parking brake through the frame I think was started about March 1930. |

Re: 1928 gas cap
The frame, steering wheel and gas tank all say 1930.

Re: 1928 gas cap
So is the frame correct for an early 30?

Re: 1928 gas cap
Agreed, it looks like he's got an early 30 truck. A good friend of mine has an early 30 Deluxe Delivery and it's exactly the same, with the 28/29 style body, 30/31 style frame and steering box, and 28/29 style tank with the 30/31 gas cap.

Re: 1928 gas cap
I just checked and I have stamped running board brackets. 29/30 as everyone is seeming to agree upon. Thanks to all.
