Default Mercury borg and beck pressure plate

My understanding the 49 to early 51 mercury borg and beck pressure plate is 10". I was digging out some stuff to swap a motor in my 40 ford. 53 merc motor 49/50 tin merc bellhousing and a 49/50 merc flywheel. Got the new pressure plate out and it bolts up but the contact surface measures 10-1/2". No clue were it came from and no box. Only number i could find is 1773.

Couldnt find any info on it. I guess the only real question is will it work?

The fingers look a little close. I'll have to check my interchange book and see if the 1773 is in there. I do know that it's not a 49/E51 Mercury number. Most Mercury clutches don't use all the spring positions and may not have that many springs either.

That looks like a late 51 Merc (thru 53) with the 1-inch 10-spline trans input. The change was sometime after the first part of 1951. The earlier 51 cars still had the old style but they do look a lot alike and they are all 10-inch

Thinking it's possibly a truck application.
And then again it may not even be a Ford plate but GM. or other application.

The 1-3/8" input fits with no issue. The dept from the flywheel surface to the tips of the fingers is the same as a Long styl3 for a flathead. It bolts up to the 49 to early 51 flywheel. What i can see is that it has A LOT of springs like its a racing pressure plate. I guess it will work but will have a harder pedal to push in

I got one of them too but its for a Oldsmobile Lasalle setup with and aluminum plessure plate and flywheel!

I do have some clutch discs that are solid center with no spring with a 1-3/8 ford spline. Are they tractor or industrial?

They say a mid 80s Camaro pressure plate can be made to work but it has the diaphragm type release fingers. It will fit the bolt pattern but the fingers & drive disk would likely have to be modified for a 1 3/8" 10-spline unless Center Force makes one for the 10-inch diaphragm cover for 8BA flatheads.

My Hollander manual for 1946 to 56 only lists numbers from 801 up through 1404 so it's newer than those years. The 1949 through early 51 Mercury uses clutch cover numbers 0988 and 1310. The later 1951 through 53 Mercury lists cover numbers 1318 and 1319.

The clutch in question might be a bit heavier than the smaller 10-inch for Mercs. A diaphragm type should be lighter than all of them save maybe the old 9-inch Long type. A person could give Fort Wayne clutch a call and ask them what it was made to fit. They should have all the clutch manuals with the Borg & Beck listings. Those old clutch reference manuals are very hard to get and cost a fortune if you buy a set.

Send a PM to "Angledrive", a member here and on the HAMB, for his opinion. We got him a Merc B&B core clutch and pressure plate like he needed for his project, and then he sent it Ft Wayne to have rebuilt. I believe the PP was 10-1/2" across the face. I think he would know what you need and could determine if the one in your picture is correct.

That style 10.5 goes on Ford, GM and chrysler so should be able to find a disc with the spline you need for it.
It´s a bit overkill for the aplication, you can alway take the 3 middlesprings out of the pressureplate...

I got plenty of 10" clutch disc with the 1-3/8 10 spline. Was just wondering what the pressure was for originally. Aside from the extra springs i cant see why it wont work. Thanks for all the replies
