I am still looking for a set of 1940 rear brake drums for my '35 that has been converted to hydraulic brakes. I came across a set of 1935 brake drums. They take a 1.75 shoe and are 12" wide. The people I have called are divided in that half say they won't work and they will work, but they are not certain. These are a one year drum so maybe no one knows if they will work or not as there are very few out there. My question is will they work on a 1940 hydraulic set-up and has someone ACTUALLY done this? I cannot afford to buy stuff that doesn't work and then it languishes on the storage shelf unused,$$$$. Can anyone answer this from EXPERIENCE? Thank-you,....Matt in Alameda

For what it is worth.
I saw a posting on another site where a person tried to do this and it didn't work. Sorry that I can't give you more of a first hand opion.
Hopefully some one else will chime in....

On my 33 I have a 33 axle with 40 backplates and 33 drums. It works, but only just. The shoes are the same width as the drums and I do get a slight rubbing noise now and then, but it has been like this for 60 years so I just carry on.

I don't know if the 35 drums would be different.

The 35 drum will work correctly. The only issue is with the wheel mounting. If you intend to use the stock 35 wires its a bolt on. If you intend to use aftermarket wheels or 40-48 style steel wheels, the wire wheel support nubs on the 35 drum must be ground off so the late model wheels fit flush to the hub. Most important is that the drums should not be turned more that .080 oversize
