Any experience with transmission anti-leakage plugs
Has anybody installed this modification, 2 blind plugs that go into the holes of the bellhousing and that cover the transmission shifter-fork-shafts to stop the leakage of transmission oil into the bellhousing?
I am asking, because at the other side, the shifter tower has originally a similar design (blind bore for each shifter shaft), however the shafts have a groove on that side, to drain the oil from the blind hole, to avoid oil build up which may cause hard shifting. If installing these blind plugs, do I need to grind grooves in the shifter shafts at the bellhousing-side? Or does the oil drain from the blind plugs via the notches of the shifter shafts? Anybody on here that has put some miles on these blind plugs? |

A friend recommends using ½ inch copper pipe caps, 25 cents at your local hardware store. Shorten the cap so it fits in the bellhousing shift shaft hole leaving enough room for the shift shaft to slide in and not have interference. If they drove in too hard trim the OD a small amount. Worked for me!!

These plugs will not cause hard shifting.
I have about 10,000 miles after I installed these plugs on a Model A I use for touring. No more oil leaking and no evidence of hard shifting. My experience, Chris W. |

Re: Any experience with transmission anti-leakage plugs
I did a similar install...used copper pipe caps....I soldered them together just because it seemed less likely that they'd work their way out.....
I did use plenty of penetrating loctite.....

The excessive leakage problem has occurred with the introduction of the Mitchell transmission. This transmission uses a much lighter oil and is prone to allow more oil to get past the shift rods in the tower. This is why Mitchell developed a device that fits into the holes in the bell housing to seal off any oil leakage. Most of the suppliers carry it. Tom Endy |
