It's the first style of drive shaft used on an A, the pinion bearings are adjusted via the larger diameter threads on the shaft rather than the on the pinion as with later A's

Attached article describes the ring & pinion used in the early cars that also used a different drive shaft. The one in the right side photo shown in the question post is an early drive shaft.
