1947 Ford 1 Ton Panel Delivery

Hello'

I have a question... planning to get my 1947 Ford 1 Ton Panel for registation overhere, but... the vin/engine number on Title, frame and dash plate reads 71GYxxxxxx

Now i cant directly find a decoder or website for this number,
Can anybody help me to get a (copy of a ) form or link that proves that this is the correct number that belongs to the truck?

the seriel number should be stamped on the transmission above the inspection cover, and on the frames about where the steering gear attaches to the frame. G is designate for a 6 cylinder engine, Y is for 1 ton--try Vanpelt's Website for ID help

Thanks Alanwoodieman... I allready knew about the vanpelt's page...
but that only shows the 71GA number and ( or i misread ) doesnt show anything about the Y

Ford 6 - 90hp (G) - 71GA- 326,418 to 71GA- 414,366

So i would still be happy to get a prove that says the they put the Y instead of A in use for 1 tonners

If it's any help, my '42 1 ton panel truck has a serial number of 1GY-82555. This is the number found on the transmission cover and the frame.

Y is the designation for the Tonner. The serial number sound proper.

Nice truck VonSkip. The rear bumper is interesting. I knew a builder in the 80's who used one of these as a work truck ( Chevy engine) but I cant recall it having a bumper or not.

I know that panel from a guy named Jon, just north of Seattle. He said it had been owned by Krispy Kreme Donuts. He sold it to a guy in Canada, then it went to California. When I met him I was buying parts from his CL ad. He showed me some tonner ford script hubcaps that were wrapped in tissue and looked nos. Then someone from the Netherlands showed up on FTE looking for those type of caps so I told him about Jon. Jon shipped them to the Netherlands about 2 months ago. I thought maybe it was you buying them for his old panel, but he told me yesterday on the phone that the buyer had a tonner stakebed truck. I bought a tonner panel about 3 weeks ago. It has a dented in hood and a broken in half rear axle housing. I had a '47 tonner rear axle on an old box trailer, so I ressurected it and did the brakes and seals. I also have a great hood that I bought from jon last spring. Here is a shot of a few of my trucks and you can add a '46 1/2 ton, solid, original not running and of course the aforementioned tonner panel. The panel is supposed to be delivered next weekend. I will start my own thread so as not to further hijack this thread. Also upon review I see the pic I posted was my avatar. I obviously haven't posted here in a while.....

That panel is my old panel. Gary told me about it being on here.
It was a Krispie Kreme truck in Los Vegas when I bought it.
I am from Seattle area. I rebuilt the brake system new master wheel cylinders , brake shoes lines, also new wheel bearings and seals in both axles. New tires
Engine is a chebbie 5liter, 350 turbo It was in it when I got it.
I made gauges and speedo work. I used it for a work truck drove it daily.
I sold it to a guy in BC. he sold it to a guy in Calif.
I have the little inspection cover for the rear door if you want it.

Welcome back, nice to see all of those tonner's. I like having the panel but my big truck, comes in handy from time to time.

As a cabinetmaker I have been dying to know if a 4x8 sheet of plywood fits in the tonner panel. FTS'05 by James Wagner states that there was a width increase of 2 1/2" between the wheel housings starting in 1942. I daily drove a '38 tonner pickup for almost ten years back in the '90s. It was too narrow for plywood. My '47 rear axle has 52" between the tires which should yield the needed 48 1/2", but what about the length? It's not crucial as I have a stepvan that we haul plywood with, but it would be nice to know for occasional use. Nice to see you show up Jon! I'm quite active on FTE, but my love for the pre-war style trucks brings me here as there is not a lot of activity there on the older stuff.

My '42 1 ton panel has 48 1/2 inches between the wheel housings and 102" in length. You should have no trouble carrying 4' x 8' sheets of plywood.

Great news about the plywood! My '59 9' express has 48 1/2 also. Most of our cabinet plywood is coming through at 48 1/2" these days. The first sheet seems to stick between the wheel housings in the '59, but gets looser as it goes up. Anyone who has lived in Western Washington knows that with a plywood delivery on every other wednesday, it is bound to be raining on that day. I'm still waiting for the Russian truckers to pick this thing up. Last year I bought a '47 2 ton from N. Dakota. Since then I installed my ford script 9' stakebed, did the brakes, bought six tires on CL, installed a used 8ba, installed a suburban 3rd row seat and had a friend do a cab corner. On and on. Now to me it is complete and I need this panel for my winter project.

I am still waiting for my tonner panel to be picked up in Parkers Prairie Minnesota. It is listed on Central Dispatch. I have added more money to the listing yesterday with hopes of luring a trucker into the area. I'm pretty much sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation of seeing what I bought. Seller claims he doesn't know if engine turns or not. An FTE buddy shipped me two new 7.50 x 17 highway tires yesterday that he got in a trade. He is a Marmon Herrington guy, so only uses traction tires. I only pay the shipping! My rebuilt rear axle and hood are waiting for their recipient as well. Looks like this site has been displaying photos as thumbnails. Same thing happened a few days ago to FTE. What's up? Here's a couple more pics.
