OFF TOPIC! Case backhoe adjustment
Once again, I want to call upon the collective experience of this forum. My diesel backhoe has a problem I don't know how to solve. It's slowly increasing it's "Idle". It Idles now about 1500 rpm and I don't know how to slow it down. It runs fine otherwise. It's just too fast. It's a Case 580 E

Re: OFF TOPIC! Case backhoe adjustment
Does the engine breather feed back into the air cleaner? It does on my VW diesel Rabbit, and when I bought the car it had so much blowby that the engine took off like a jack rabbit because it was running on crankcase oil. A new set of rings fixed it.

Re: OFF TOPIC! Case backhoe adjustment
Post a picture of the injection pump---I worked on both a 580, and a 780 a long time ago, one has rotary pump, other inline
I think it has a rotomaster pump ---I think that pump has a plastic piece inside that goes bad ---they act weird for a while then they either won't run or won't stop ---I remember someone trying to shut one down using a rag stuffed in the intake ---and it sucking in the rag and fluffy lint coming out the exhaust---if yours is acting up you should move it close to where you will work on it while it still runs |

Re: OFF TOPIC! Case backhoe adjustment
You are going to be pulling the pump and getting it looked at.It should be a Roosamaster pump,(unless it is a later model tractor with the Cummins, they'll have a Bosch.) Some have speed advance, and some have load advance governors.Either way there are worn parts in there that will let it creep up while it is idling. Some have a hard plastic ring on the advance held on by three rivets. They will swell and crack at the rivets, eventually breaking. There are other parts in there that can break and let it run away on you.If you can blip the throttle by hand, and it returns to normal, then starts to rev on it's own again,it's in the pump.Of course this is all provided you don't have some kind of linkage problem, but you would be able to see that.
