Help with rims
Okay, I need your expert help again. I now own a nice little 55 ford f-100
that came to me with a newer differential. A 9" ford with 5 on 4 1.25 lug pattern 15 " rims. What the heck is this? I need new rims as the rear rims i have don't center and feel square. The front fits nice but it's a mustang conversion but a kit with no date. Same pattern but centers. Thanks again for the help' Jim. |

Re: Help with rims
You need one of these. Always have mine for swap meets, etc.

Re: Help with rims
I'm not clear as to exactly what you mean by "Mustang conversion" so I'm assuming it's the front. 4.25 x 15 Ford rims changed from a small center opening to a larger one. Often front disc brake conversions come with the hub of the rotor turned down to allow earlier wheels to fit. The 9" rears came the same way AFAIK. Sounds to me like you've got mismatch on the center opening. The two above post are correct for measurement and for spacing the wheel out to clear the larger center opening. I've never used spacers for that problem, but if 51540bat is saying it works, ok. I've always bought wheels that would center on the lugs, and made sure there was flat contact to the drum or rotor.
Oops, I just realized he's showing a measuring device, not a spacer. But my comment about the wheel centers stands. And I missed the 4.25 should be 4.5. To many years, I guess. Last edited by miker98038; 12-02-2020 at 12:34 AM. |

Re: Help with rims
While Ford did come out with a 4 1/4" bolt circle on some models a
few years ago, Your 9" rear and Mustang 5 lug front should be 4 1/2". Measure using the chart that dmsfrr provided for measuring 5 lugs. Also, you say the center hole on your 9" rear is different then the wheels you are using. Is that center hole smaller then your wheel center hole ? I believe it was in '69 that Ford changed the size of the center hole. Ford changed from 2 3/8" center to 2 3/4" center hole. .

Re: Help with rims
We machined out the center holes so the wheel fit flat against the hub. and viola. That did it. We opened them about 1/8". I still haven't figured what wheels I need. The pattern is 5x 108mm?

Re: Help with rims
So are the wheels you opened up the center on, steel or aluminum wheels ?
.

Re: Help with rims
When I considered enlarging the center hole on the stock wheels on my Ranch Wagon because they wouldn't fit over the axle registers on the Maverick rear end I installed I posted a question about it on the HAMB. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...wheel.1206613/
The consensus was not to do it, it would weaken the wheel and lead to cracking.

Re: Help with rims
Is it out of a Demon? The dusters, and all the other Plymouths and Dodges were different for some reason. Kid I went to high-school with had a demon, and his drag slicks were on Centerlines he had to order from Jegs.

Re: Help with rims
Most Mopars had the 5 lug x 4.5" bp.
But Mopar also used the 5 lug x 4.0" bp. Only 1 Mopar that I know of used the 5 lug x 4.25" and that was '90-'92 Monoco. .

Re: Help with rims
You can open up the center hole on a thicker aluminum wheel somewhat,
and be pretty safe. When you open up the center on a steel wheel, it is very possible that the metal will flex and crack from the center hole to the lug holes, and that is very un-safe. .

Re: Help with rims
Thank you all very much. I'm buying new wheels that fit. Much safer.

Re: Help with rims
These are definitely handy little guides to correctly identify the different bolt patterns when you are looking for a wheel with a specific bolt pattern at a swap meet. |

Re: Help with rims
Early Bronco's were 5 on 5 1/2. Not sure about the later ones.

Re: Help with rims
1982-1990 Bronco II used a 5x4.5" bolt circle wheel.
The small Ranger pickups used that same wheel for most years too. .

Re: Help with rims
What year did F150's go away from the 5.5" bolt circle?
