What is the purpose of this?
Can someone tell my what is the purpose of the spare tire hub cap opening on a 36 humpback for? Its a pretty elaborate set up, something must go in there.

Keyed lock cylinder so the no goods can't steal your spare.

Re: What is the purpose of this?
This is the lock mechanism that you are looking for. There is a spring and a lock ring you will also need.

Re: What is the purpose of this?
The spring and lock ring may still be in place as it appears that someone drilled out the lock cylinder with a very big drill bit or repeatedly with a smaller drill bit. Ouch!

Re: What is the purpose of this?
Good news, there are few slimeballs who would be interested in stealing a wide 5 wheel lurking the parking lots these days.
My initial reaction to your original question was "To frustrate the heck out of you, before you get to the fun of the spare-tire-ring circus."

Re: What is the purpose of this?
That mounting plate is not for 36 wide five spare carriers. Looks like 35. Is that a spring or bolt? Whichever, I cannot see its purpose.
