Default Burning or losing oil

What is the normal amount of oil that should be consumed per 100 miles.
I have a 28 that seems to be running hot with some blow by(I noticed the oil filler tube cap wasnt pushed down all the way). It seems to use a half a quart to a quart every 100 miles. Is this normal

you should not consume any oil in 100 miles.... if you have excessive blowby from bad rings its probably pushing the oil out externally and burning possibly. sounds like it might be time for a motor job and new radiator????

how much oil is leaking out from under the car???
pull the plugs and see if you have carbon deposits from burning oil
does it smoke out the tail pipe???

It does not seem to smoke while driving but a little on start up. I had the cap for filler tube sitting too high because I did not realize it could be pushed right down with a tighter fit. I thought maybe I was losing alot because of that but have not tried it since. The engine was supposed to be rebuilt with very few miles which, when I took apart and inspected seemed to be the case. It does not leave much on the garage floor, but it does leave a little. Would it burn more because it is running hotter than normal

How high on the dipstick are you filling it to? Mine seems to leak and/or blow out about 1/2 quart (between F and L) then its happy.

I also only fill to the midway point between FULL and ADD.

If you are pushing the cap ALL THE WAY DOWN, then that might be your problem. The cap MUST vent air and has 3 or 4 tabs to keep it from being pushed all the way down. Sometimes these tabs get bent back and the cap gets pushed on too far, then oil gets pushed out the rear main.

the plugs are brown on the electrode and the circular base is black powdery carbon. I just recently pushed the cap all the way down. I don t know if it was on all the way previously. My rad intake pipe is oily from oil coming out of the cap(blow by) That is why I was not sure if the cap was on all the way. I should do a compression test. What should the compression be with a normal stock head

As Jeff said, my well worn temporary engine in my 1928 is 50-50-50-50 and has good power. I'm waiting on counterweights for the original engine to this car.

When you do the compression test I would assume you remove all the plugs and test each cylinder with 1 compression stroke or would you let it turn over for a couple of compression strokes.

Remove all plugs and spin it 3 or 4 times for each cylinder. You'll read to open the throttle while checking the compression, but I've never found it to matter.

First hundred miles on a rebuild? 1/2 qt every 100 miles seems like a leak, not burning of oil. How well does the engine run?

Mine consumed a quart every hundred miles until late last summer. It had about 58k miles on it and had never been rebuilt. To keep the blowby out of the cabin, I had to put one of those oil caps on the breather that had that flexible metal conduit on it to direct the fumes under the chassis. Now it burns almost nothing in 500 miles. The cure? I pulled the motor and had it rebuilt! And the oil stays clean for 500 miles!

It seems like it is still running hot, but not boiling over. It will lose power the longer I drive it. When I first start to drive it runs great. As soon as it starts to warm up it seems to lose power. I think this is when the oil is burning
