Ford used an alkyd-based enamel in a dipping tank. The items were dipped to apply the paint and allowed to drip to remove excess and then dried in steam ovens. The closest thing I have found to the old enamel is the enamels sold at the tractor supply stores.

As far as authenticity is concerned today, the exact shade if Black is not as important as the uniformity throughout all components which were gloss black, and the correct finish on all areas of the components. For example, the Fenders & Splash Pans should be as glossy & without texture underneath as they are on top.

My Dad used to say "It's so black it's white".
