Default Engine backfires and does not run smooth

I have my 40 Pickup running now. Has a rebuilt 59-A (by me). It does not run smooth and backfires occasionaly. I suspect I have two cylinder plug wires crossed? It also bucks now and then when I try to drive it? Any suggestions? Thanks, Jack in San Diego

To checjk the firing order I have to take the distributor off, take the cap off and pull it all apart. I was looking for an easier way. haha (no easy way I guess)

Sounds to me like intermittent ignition. Check the back of the key switch. Is it hot? That happened on my '40 and the connection at the switch was loose. A loose connection at the switch will generate a lot of heat at the switch. It should not be hot.

Why would you have to take the dizzy off??. No need to. Just remove the wire loom tube with the wires intact with the inner + outer caps, separate the I+O caps and check that way.pass side is 1,2,3,4, #'s are on the inner cap read right side up and drivers side is 5,6,7,8 read those cap #'s right side up on that side.Opposite side #'s will be upside down at that time.Make sure wires are pushed all the way into the cap towers.Probebly dosen't sound easy for a newbie, but its real simple to do.Its not in the dizzy its in the caps. ken ct. Hope its clear as mud.LOL Are we having fun yet.
