A little film you might enjoy
Last weekend Clara (my Model A) and I did the London to Brighton run. This isn't the official one, which is in November and for veteran cars only, but another one organised for vintage, classic, sports and kit cars. It started from the Brooklands museum and finished on the sea front at Brighton. We were the 3rd oldest car on the run and, what with getting to the start, doing the run and getting home again afterwards, we were on the road for the best part of 8 hours. This is by far the longest run I've done since I got her last year and she didn't miss a beat all day, even in the horrific traffic in Brighton. The film is only 4 minutes but hopefully gives a nice flavour of the run.

Re: A little film you might enjoy
Great stuff but I'm not sure I would like those narrow rural roads.

Re: A little film you might enjoy
Makes me want to come over again. Never made it to Brighton. Frinton on Sea and a lot of Kent around Rochester. Quite a bit up north and much time in Scotland. Great roads there, single tracks with well timed passing points. Wonder we Yanks made it, but good fun always.I didn't drive in London. Crazy, much like the states, especially San Francisco. Loved your video.

Re: A little film you might enjoy
It can get interesting on the smaller roads as the steering has a bit of play so placing the car very accurately can be a challenge... Trick is to keep the speed down, be ready to stop and enjoy the view!

Re: A little film you might enjoy
WOW !!! Really did enjoy the video . Nice phaeton or tourer as the DVLA has put on my V5 .I have the same car but with the small bore English 14.9 HP engine but as the phaeton body is quite light it cruises happily at 40MPH which is OK .The rear end has the small bore 4.55 to 1 ratio so can get down to jogging pace and stay in high gear ideal for country lanes . I see by the bumper clamps your car looks Canadian built so I guess maybe in from the Colonies although the kick guard on the rear wing (fender) looks very South American .

You're right, it is a Canadian built car. It actually spent all of its life in Australia though - apparently the kick guards are a big thing there. It also has a 4 blade fan with cowl, which is apparently another Australian thing. Since owning it I've been in good contact with the Queensland Model A club, who have been helping me to trace a little bit of the history of the car. The centre badge on the badge bar is a Model A club of Queensland badge which they sent me. Although I have the 3.3 litre engine 40-45 is still my happiest cruising speed; above that it all just gets a bit frenetic and the roof flaps about a bit. I think the smaller bore engine is quieter though isn't it? Clara is lovely, but she's not subtle and I have to think very carefully when we meet horses! Sent from my SM-T800 using Tapatalk |

Re: A little film you might enjoy
Either that's a FAST Model A or the Camera is running on 48 Volts, aided by a solid state semi-conductor, with a POSITIVE coefficient????

Re: A little film you might enjoy
You are right the 3" bore AF engine is much smoother than a 24 HP engine ,due to less rotating weight etc etc . The bottom end is the same but smaller pistons and lighter con rod ( wrist pin end more narrow) make the difference . The AF engine produces 28 BHP at 2600 RPM which is OK on the flat but in hilly country you can really feel the difference . Luckily Suffolk is fairly flat !!! . Because of higher operating speeds the AF engine had a propensity to fret and eat the fibre timing gear . This brought the vehicle to a halt and the timing gear then changed . As the sump remained on no one thought to check the oil pump pickup filter and after a few timing gear changes the filter screen would get completely blocked with Celeron fretting debris and then terminal engine failure .I have taken oil pumps out of dead AF engines to find the oil pump screen covered with what looks like a dense brown felt layer .After WW2 24 HP Dagenham B engines were plentiful as they were used in generator sets and many other applications etc etc so the AF motor was changed for a B ,The "HP Tax" had been abolished so no extra tax for a 24 HP engine . The rear end also had to be changed to 3.78 to 1 . from 4.55 to 1 .

Re: A little film you might enjoy
yes, I enjoyed that. but I have two questions for you.
1. do you have a little Christian cross on the boot cowl for each pedestrian you skittle.? 2. Is it compulsory to drive down those little lanes at 80 mph?

Re: A little film you might enjoy
Nice car and a wonderful film clip! One question: the bug screen in front of
the radiator. Did it come with the car or did you purchase it separately. Any possibility of getting some close up pics of the screen? I have a fondness for unusual Model-A accessories. Thank you. Bob-A |

It was on the car when I bought it. From what I've learned it was made by a guy in Australia - he made a few of them and sold them. It's not very robust and I was originally going to remove it but it was one of the features that enabled the Queensland club to recognise my car and tell me who restored it so I decided to keep it. Re: A little film you might enjoy
patnmand,
Thanks for the reply with the great pics! I sure could use a screen like that here in Florida, USA. Especially when we have the infamous "love-bugs" swarming about in May and Sept. Bob-A |
