Default 33/34 fordor Fords

I have a friend that has a nice 33 that he is thinking of trading for a 34. He hasn't been following values as his car has been sitting in his garage for about 20 years and was only started a few times and probably driven 3 miles in the last ten. Now I'm more into Model A's so I can't really advise him. Assuming that the two cars are in like condition, is one more valuable than the other? If there is a small difference, I think he'd make the trade but if they a several grand apart, I doubt it. Thanks for anything you can tell me to help him.

Another question along with the above. Assuming they make the trade, what does CA DMV say about this. Do both get stuck with a big fee to transfer?

body style, condition and originality are very important in doing a comparitive value.

Both cars are fordors. I haven't seen the 34 yet but am told both are in like condition, with the 33 having a 58AB block and hydraulic brakes. The 33 has mechanical brakes and the original engine. Someone has told my friend that 34's are the more desirable. I hadn't heard that and just wondering what the barners think.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Might want to clearify the differences in the previous post, which is the 33 vs the 34? Personally I prefer the look of the 33, but that has nothing to do with the relative value.

I think it boils down to his personal taste. I had a 34 sedan delivery that I sold because I didn't like driving it (huge blind spot), not because it was a 34, and today I have a 33 phaeton. While both years are really beautiful, for me the styling edge goes to the 33s. I'm not sure there is a huge difference in value because that depends on the personal preference of the buyer.

The 1934 models, although very similar in nature, have subtle differences that add up. They are still the same basic design though and most folks don't notice the differences. The 33 might have a slight bit more value due to its originality but its close enough for some. Without looking at the two of them, it would be hard for us to give you an opinion one way or the other.

Quite a bit of a difference in the total number produced from 33 to 34 (Over half as few). The 33 is far less in total numbers and I believe was the lowest TOTAL production across the board for Ford Motor Co. in total for all V8 years (33 & 38 both were low). Far less represented at the EFV8 National Meets (From personal observations). As previously stated by a few, better styling (To Me) in the 33. That of course is all personal opinions.

The condition of the vehicles in question is what will determine their values. Like condition '33 and '34 Fordors will be nearly identical in value.

It's similar to how the comparisons between a '28 to a '29, or a '30 to a '31 would go.

I think there were fewer 1933's made than 1934's because 1933 was the hight of the Great depression. Also 1933 was the first year of this classic design..which always is desirable. Tell him to keep his 33 and forget about the 1934. Just look at cars for sale and you will usually find 1934s and very few 1933s...most of which have been destroyed and converted to hot rods.

If it's the 33 that has an original engine and brakes, that makes it more valuable - at least to me it sure would be.

Sorry for the typo. The 1933 has a 59AB Engine and hydraulic brakes, the 34 has not been altered and so from the answers so far, I am guessing that they should be about a wash. That is if the 34is as original as the owner told my friend it is. Thanks so much for your comments. Personally I like the 33 better than 34 with everything else being equal, but neither is my car.

To me the 1933 just edges out the '34's. Both years are beautiful. The '33 dash is a bit more interesting, I like the scoop of the grille, and the relative rarity compared to the '34's. 1933 was the year my dad was born so it has a little more significance to me. If you delve into each of the '33's and '34's, there are many differences. But at a glance, they look very similar. Good luck with whichever you choose! For those who might be curious, My Ford Magazine did a little article recently on the '33 Ford. Copy and paste:

Speaking from experience as an owner of a '33 Deluxe Fordor, a properly restored original with original engine, matching transmission, mechanical brakes, etc, would fetch around $30K-$40K. That is with a body off restoration. Now you will have a hell of a lot more invested in it if doing it yourself.

I did read the whole post, and I've just read it again and again. I gota be missing something, it still reads to me that you'd have a hell of a lot more than 30-40 g's?
Could be a classic case of England and America being separated by the same language.
Could you elaborate please? I'm trying to understand what you ment.
Thanks,
Martin.

It's always a matter of perspective. I'm a cheep skate so I don't spend that much on any restorations but then I know how to fix more stuff than most folks would mess with. Where I get hammered is the labor time invested but that only costs me in time so I can live with that. I also have a tendency to wear the damn things back out so I can get something back out of the deal.

If you have to pay someone for the labor at todays rates then your getting buggerd for sure. I wished I had cash like that. If I did, I'd just buy them already restored and save the aggravation of dealing with the resto business. Most of us do this stuff for some sort of satisfaction or we would just be happy with the new crap.

Either you're missing something in your statement, or you are indeed saying that a self-build would cost more than $30-40k, which is what "scooder" was trying to confirm.

Are you assuming that "he" would be doing the labor himself or farming it out?

We were referring to a cash value for a correct car, restored properly. That value for a Deluxe Fordor runs in the range of $30-$40K. That's a market price.
Now obviously you are going to be in it for a lot more than that if attempting to do a complete resto.
Hope that makes sense.
