Default play in steering

our 31 pickup play at wheel is less than 1/2 inch left and right,no shimmy,steers fine,but when moved left and right watching steering shaft I can see it move up and down,not very much but does have movement is this normal or as I am told "to picky"

.............are you speaking of the steering shaft, --or the sector shaft coming out of the steering gear box?

If the steering box is tight to the frame and no movement in it as opposed to the frame the sector shaft should not move. You may see a very little but under much pressure the shaft might look like it is moving because the frame will flex some. Watch closely and make sure the shaft is what is really moving.
