Was the rear view mirror clock available in 1933?

The original clock/watch was made by Sandoz? I mknow something about original watches and clocks from 20's and 30's. Elgin, waltham, Hamiliton were the standard American companies producing quality watches. Is the Sandoz a swiss brand? If it is then bad news, hard to get parts for swiss watches.

The Sandoz clock co was established in the late 19'th century and is still in business. Sandoz mirror clocks bring the highest prices of them all. BUT, as Frank says parts are scarce as well as clock repairmen that work on them. I've had several and even when not in running condition they will bring high prices just for parts. The rarest that I know of is the authorized 1934 Sandoz mirror clock with the Ford script.

Yes its Sandoz and Swiss.Lots of sidewind on EBAY each week so those parts are around. The rear wind is another story .The movement has 2 mainsprings and the balance staff different then the sidewind. The sidewinds on EBAY is an affordable substitute. They have on the face Sandozvuille 8 days. Most all are missing the mirrors.

Here is a link to one that is in running condition.

The movement is very poor quality like the old Timex and 30 hr.Good luck trying to find a watchmaker to fix that one- especially the string wind.Sandoz is far superior. If authenticity is not important just keep looking.I found a Jaeger 8 day with the mirror on EBAY for $100 3 months ago.I had it completely serviced for $50.Works for 10 days each time I wind it after it stops. Here are pics of it.

I am a watchmaker and many of the old timex, westclock movements are quite easy to repair.
Swiss balance wheels, if have broken pivots on the other hand require quite a bit of study and work to repair. The positive thing is that usually balance wheel pivots are not broken but the movement is merely gummed up and can easily be cleaned up to function.

The mirror clock in my '34 was made by Western Clock Co. in LaSalle, Illinois. The dial is black faced with white numerals and white Ford script. This clock is wound with a pull-string. The pull-string has what looks like a bakelite knob on its end. It works like a champ....

The Sandoz sidewinds have a spacer ring and threaded ring. You need to get the correct mirror with the hole in it.They also should have a relief for the stem or crown. There is a V8 Club member that advertises in the V8 Times.I have purchased mirrors from him and although pricey they are excellent quality. They fit right in the original bracket by loosening the 3 screws of the clamp.

Note that the hands of the Ford version of the Sandoz are quite different from the non-Ford Sandoz.

New Haven also made clock mirrors. I have a NOS one in the box and it's the string wind clock.

If you want a rundown of Ford mirror clocks from 1934 thru 1936 please refer to pg. 120 thru 121 in The 1935-36 Ford Book.

While Sandoz made the "Official" rear view mirror clock for the 1934 Fords, there were tons of after market rear view mirror clocks, most popular from the 1900's through the late 1930's. Some were very high quality, some not so much. Some were very beautiful. They all had a practical function. This function originally was measuring distances in the form of time, also knowing the current time too. I have a mirror clock in my '33 that has a rare convex (Bowed)mirror. This is reeeeal handy because it helps the rear field of vision as the '33 Fords did not come with outside mounted rear view mirrors. I thought these were so cool, I began collecting them many years ago. -Kind of "Functional Art" if you will.

I plan to get one..I am starting to look around...I want an old one from the original time frame, not some new replica that looks lousy. I would really like an original with glowing radium dial and hand markers. Gives and eerie look. The radiation from those is safe unless you ingest it. All the dangerous particles , Alpha particles, are very heavy and are stopped in the watch crystal.

Here's a picture of the mirror clock out of my '34. I don't see it pictured in the EFV8 Club Restoration Manual. I'm wondering if is an authorized accessory clock or an after market clock. It slides onto the back of the mirror....

Looks like an original clock. Very nice face. It might be from the 1935-36 era. You can find the glass usually somewhere on ebay. There is a round, narrow paper gasket that protects the glass from the metal clock housing. I think the mirrors are rounded ends instead of squared off. I could be wrong but I think someone has made excellent copies of original, correct glass. Also, (While I'm rolling) When you mount the mirror clock to the bracket, put a small piece of fabric to protect the back of glass from the the metal of the bracket. This was standard on original installations. Usually left over interior scraps.
