Yep, that is standard procedure when driving a vehicle with non-synchromesh 1st gear. Shifting to 2nd or 3rd uses the synchronizer blocking rings to stop the counter shaft from turning, and then you can shift to 1st or reverse without grinding.
If it still grinds going into 1st, the clutch is dragging. Make sure the freeplay is properly set.

You may not have the original trans,39 is a one year lever on trans.
If the lever is like from a 32 its longer say 4" the 39 should be about 3 1/2" Long.
By being shorter it will stop clutch drag. I found that out on my 39 sedan.

This is a video I made of how to check if the clutch is releasing.

Disclaimer - it may seem brutal to a person not familiar with what is being done. It does Require skill and finesse, and if done carefully will not distress the gear teeth.

What grade gear oil are you using? It seems okay when its cold, when the oil is thick. As it warms up, the oil is getting thinner (lighter), and not slowing the cluster down as quickly.

Hi George,

I'm curious about your mention about the different arm lengths, "If the lever is like from a 32 its longer say 4" the 39 should be about 3 1/2" Long. By being shorter it will stop clutch drag". Which arm are you referring to, the external one on the clutch shaft or the throughout bearing arm? Don't see how the throughout arm could be of a different length. I have a 39 transmission in my 32 with stock 32 pedals and arms.

Looks like I need to get a 39 arm. My clutch releases close to the floor board with maybe 3/4” to 1” of free movement at top.

George where you able to clear the ant-chatter rod or remove it? Looks to me that the 39 arm can’t be used in the 42 without taking out the ant-chatter rod.

Thanks,
Glenn

You mean 32 If you use the 39 pedals and 39 arm will work.
If you use 40 pedals the arm is on frame and use 40 to 49 slot and horz is not the same type. Those ant chatter rods one will do.
With a 32pedal could you use a 32 trans arm. They are matched length.
I found that I had a 32 arm on my 39 and was grinding gears.
39 is a one only setup. Glen ever get to Gardner cruise in.

Yes, I meant “32”. I’m going to leave it as is, a set for a 32.

Thanks

Glenn...'42s through '48 (US-built) did away with anti chatter rods. Canadian cars still used the rods, but they ran forward like ALL of the '41s did! DD
