I was always told to torque the studs into the block to prevent leaks. That's why they only have 7.8 threads on the course end.??????

Sometimes the stud wants to turn on final assembly even if it has sealer or RTV on it. If the nut runs free, this won't happen. If the stud is bottomed out to start and it is a blind hole, it will punch the bottom of the hole out and then you have pieces of cast iron running through the water system and pump. Not to mention the possibility of a cracked block.
Normally the high temp RTV or non hardening sealer will hold the stud from turning if left to cure overnight. They absolutely do not leak if done this way.
