Default Brake Part ID

I am rebuilding the front brakes on my '30 Coupe.

In place of the wedge stud, I found this part. Nobody
seems to be able to identify it.

Does anybody know the origin of this unusual part.

Thanks.

Mike

It looks like an old aftermarket brake floater. Instead of the back plate that has the wings it was made as one unit. Neat accessory.

Dunno about floater - but it does resemble part No. 26 on Snyder's blow out of the front brakes. But with ears.

It mirrors the look of the back plate with it's "ears" but one would have to put the pins in backwards to have them contact these ears.

Maybe that's the thought? Did it have a back plate?

Is the wedge the usual arrangement?

Yeah Joe, it had a back plate and a standard wedge. Weird, huh?

The back plate is of course riveted into the backing plate.

Once that wears, think field expedient repair?

So a washer with ears - and turn the existing pins around (struggle putting the cotter-pins in the backside) and voila, you have the same function but you don't have to tear down the entire brake assembly?

And you leave the existing back plate in place.

Thinking a bit further, why didn't Ford design it like this in the first place?

Well, I hope I have this thought right. I haven't seen any period literature saying "renew your worn brakes with our special bolt thingy."

Thanks Joe & Mark for the input.

I believe that has to be it. Would sure like to know its origin.

I just thought I would re-pop this thread. I think we have determined it is a back plate "saver". I showed it to some of the guys in my club and got the blank look.

Does anyone have any idea who may have manufactured or sold this? How about what era?

Thanks guys.
