Is this cluster gear OK?

Thank you, I am actively looking for better gears. I have a 78 case as well as the original 32 case. Are the 1949-50 mercury transmissions the same for 1st, 2nd and cluster? I think a friend has one.

No, I don't believe they are. My advice is to purchase Mac VP's transmission book. It is a wealth of information and will guide you through the process and help you identify what you've got.

The gears and synchro are the most updated set for the 1949 up into early 1951 Mercury and have interchangeability with the 36 & up cluster but they have a different thrust washer & locator knubs on the back of the cluster gear. They are the replacement parts for the 1939 up transmissions. The second gear works with the late type main shaft. The 49-E51 case & main shaft are way different. 1951 was the change over year for the new diamond type gears. Mercury changed around February of 1951 to the new stuff. These transmissions use a separate cast iron bell housing more like the Ford car units of 52-53.

Thank you Rotowrench. I went to look at the Mercury transmission, maybe a little better than what I have. I do have Mac’s book.

Looks like it is a whole lot better than what you have,,,,,,gears look to be good .

I dunno about that, his original cluster looks better than the above one. And I'd be dubious about running that 1st/rev slider and rev idler gear too....
