Default rear axle/hub questions

I put new hubs and drums (cast iron) on the rear (they were properly mated together, or so I was told). When I tightened down the axle nuts one side was about a quarter inch further up the axle then the other side. I assume this is due to the amount of wear on the existing axles (the drum/hubs were installed dry with proper fitting keys).

Also how can you tell when there is so much wear in the axle/hub to use a shim? Is it when the drum starts to rub on the backing plate after tightening?

If you need a thicker shim, make one. It is not good to stack shims. I have seen cars that had 3, two is bad enough but 3? Make sure the backing plates are not bent also.

Our drivers side rear hub took an extra washer that the rear passenger side didn’t need.

Make sure hub is not rubbing on backing plate.

Torque to 100 psi.

Make sure the key is in the right way and not too far in, causing the hub to ride up on it when you tighten the nut. As has been said, make sure nothing rubs. Good luck.

Methinks that 100 Ft-lbs would work better.
